Regaining Trust: Lessons Learned from Losing a Local SEO Client
Losing a client can be one of the toughest moments in any SEO professional's career. Yet, these setbacks often present opportunities to refine strategies and rebuild relationships stronger than before. Let's delve into the experiences and lessons I learned after losing, and then winning back, a valued client at Sterling Sky.
The Beginning of the Journey
Imagine the sinking feeling last year when a long-standing client, who had been with us since we launched in 2017, decided to part ways. Despite our early successes in dominating local search results and setting up effective practitioner listings, the client felt our strategies had plateaued. It was a wake-up call.
Problem 1: Maximizing Existing Markets
We had successfully maxed out our client's market penetration and keyword usage. However, setting early high expectations can lead to difficulties in sustaining momentum. Continuous testing and creativity are essential. At Sterling Sky, we pivoted by researching new keyword patterns through Google Search Console and developing content around emerging search trends. For example, focusing on "cost keywords" and "near me" searches proved to be effective in generating fresh leads and maintaining dynamic growth.
Problem 2: Over-Emphasizing Link Building
Link building is a critical element in boosting organic rankings. However, for this client, whose major leads were driven by their Google Business Profile, our emphasis on link building was less impactful for local pack rankings. Through thorough testing, we observed that while links bolster organic rankings significantly, their effect on local packs was modest at best. Shifting our focus back to on-site optimization became paramount for preserving local visibility.
Problem 3: Importance of Client Education
A crucial realization was the need to keep clients informed and engaged with the strategic shifts in SEO. The client initially didn’t see the full picture of our link-building focus' impact on their rankings. We addressed this by launching educational webinars. These sessions opened doors for better understanding, allowing us to present our refined strategies directly to the clients. This approach facilitated the client's return, as they appreciated the transparency and clarity the webinars provided.
Lessons Learned and Way Forward
Our experience highlighted three key takeaways:
- Adapt with Agility: Constantly evolve your keyword strategy to tap into new trends and opportunities.
- Prioritize the Right SEO Tactics: Align your efforts with the client's primary sources of leads.
- Strengthen Communication: Build robust communication channels with clients to ensure trust and satisfaction.
By focusing on these aspects, we not only won back our client but also enriched our understanding of dynamic SEO strategies. This journey underscored the importance of adaptability, prioritizing impactful SEO practices, and maintaining clear communication.
